New England Marathon Championship team win

CMS kicked off the weekend with a team win at the Topsfield Cross Country Festival hosted by the Greater Boston Track Club. Despite the windy conditions, the team walked away with the team cash prize, a baked pie, and shoes from Puma. This was race number three in the USATF New England Cross Country Grand Prix series. The series concludes with a 10K Championship at Franklin Park in November.

The winds quieted down Sunday morning for the marathon team at the BayState Marathon in Lowell. The conditions were near perfect, high 40’s and partly sunny with a breeze. CMS’s Andy McCarron - 2:27:22.9, Jim Johnson – 2:27:33.7, and Scott Leslie – 2:28:13.4 placed 6th,7th, and 9th overall to capture the men’s open team title in a very competitive team race. Greg Hammett – 2:34:31.4 followed suit with a 17th place finish. These four men also set personal records for the marathon distance. The men’s masters team placed second overall with a scoring team of George Adams – 2:37:20.3 (20th overall, 4th master), Ken Tripp – 2:40:25.0 personal record (30th overall, 9th master), and Dan Verrington – 2:43.03.3 (35th overall, 10th master).

CMS release - 2010 Bay State Marathon

CMS declares New England Marathon Championship team entry

October 8, 2010 - Worcester, MA - The Central Mass Striders (CMS - Polar Beverages) based out of Worcester, MA - looks to defend their New England Marathon Championship title as they captured the men’s open team division in the Bay State Marathon in Lowell, MA last October. The Bay State Marathon will repeat as host for the New England Marathon Championship on October 17. CMS returns their top four Bay State participants and top master for this year’s event. Justin Fyffe – East Dummerston, VT

Justin Fyffe set a personal and Vermont resident record with a 2:22:16 effort at the Vermont City Marathon in May. He finished second overall in the Bay State Marathon with what was a personal best of 2:28:15 in 2009.

Andy McCarron – Keene, NH

Andy McCarron also set a personal best with his 2:29:01 effort at Bay State in 2009 – to take the bronze behind teammate Justin. Andy, making his marathon debut, was runner up at Bay State with a 2:32:10 in 2006.

Scott Leslie – Rutland, MA

Scott ran his second fastest time of his marathon career with a 2:33:08 clocking at Bay State in 2009. His seventh place finish closed the scoring for the Central Mass Striders. His personal best of 2:32:56 was achieved at the 2009 Boston Marathon.

Jim Johnson – Salem, NH

Jim set a personal best at the 2010 Boston Marathon in 2:30:00 shattering his previous best of 2:37:46 set at the Bay State Marathon in 2009.

Greg Hammett – Chesterfield, NH

Greg has had a solid year from the track to the roads which was highlighted by setting a personal best of 1:11:00.6 at the New Bedford Half Marathon in March. A veteran of some of New England’s toughest trails races, Greg is making his road marathon debut.

Jim Pawlicki – Beverly, MA

Jim is making his first New England Championship Marathon appearance since a 2:33:35 effort in 1997 at the Ocean State Marathon.

Dan Verrington – Bradford, MA

Dan, a veteran of several marathons, is the owner of a 2:21:10 (Vermont City Marathon, 1996) personal best. Dan ran 2:47:08 at Bay State last year which was good for the eighth quickest master effort of the day. In addition, Dan won the Bay State Marathon in 2001 with a time of 2:33:51.

George Adams – Gilsum, NH

George Adams has a personal best 2:31:25 set within an overall win at the Clarence Demar Marathon in 1996.

Dave Dunham – Bradford, MA

Dave Dunham is the Bay State Marathon event record holder with a 2:21:36 during 1998 to qualify for the Olympic Trials Marathon. Dave who graduated from UMass Lowell, has run the Bay State Marathon seven times.

Bridge of Flowers: USATF 10K Championship Race

On Saturday, August 14, Shelburne Falls hosted the infamous Bridge of Flowers 10K.  Infamous because of the little hill that comes just after the two mile mark.  That hill slows everybody's time down by at least a minute.  Not a PR course.  For the good guys, Bob Wiles led the way.  He did an excellent job covering for the absence of Justin Fyffe.  Bob started off conservatively and moved his way up into the top six by the time the race ended.  Second up for the Polar Bears was DoubleJ.  Donning an early 90s vintage Polar racing singlet, Jim plowed up the hill and through the course to finish fifteen overall.  The next two runners, Andy McCarron and Mike Quintal, have been consistent performers for CMS throughout the whole GPS series.  They finished 15 seconds apart for 17 and 19 place, respectively.  CMS' 5th man, Ben Jenkins, really bailed out the team.  He came up big as the last man to score.  The team time between second and third place was a mere two seconds.  Ben's push to be the 5th man to cross the line ensured second place for CMS.  Other guys on the team also performed well.  Kevin Tilton, Tim Mahoney, and Jim Pawlicki toughed it out over the arduous course.  So did top master performers Dan Verrington and Ernest Brake.  Many of these runners (Greg Hammett and Jeff Goupil, for example) are in the midst of upping their mileage for the fall season and trained through this race.  Watch out for these guys in October.  Still more team members were coming off the Cigna 5K which took place less than 48 hours before BOF.

Stowe Eight MIler

The Stowe 8 Miler was the 5th stop in the USATF-NE Grand Prix Series.  In the Men's Open Division, the Polar Bears took home second place. In the Master's Division, the team placed third.

For the open team, Justin Fyffe led the way by placing second overall.  Fyffe ran with a large pack for about half the race before extending it out after eventual winner Brian Harvey made a move.  Fyffe ran strong through the last mile and created a small gap on Eric Blake to place in the show position.  Bob Wiles situated himself just off the lead pack in the opening mile and ran strong throughout the race to come in second for the team.  Andy McCarron continues to be a strong and consistent force for the Striders; he was third for the team.  Mike "The Closer" Quintal ran an outstanding second half of the race.  Mike passed runners throughout the last grueling miles, a testament to his closing abilities.  Greg Hammett is back.  He ran an outstanding race in the heat to round out the top five.  The next two runners for CMS were DoubleJ and Dan Navaroli.  Dan is now fully out of his winter cocoon and running well.  New-comer Ben Jenkins, making his Polar Bear debut, did well for his first 8 miler.  We're glad to have him on the team.

The master's team was led by Dan Verrington, who runs well no matter what the racing conditions are.  DoubleD came in second for the team.  This course was hilly but just not  mountainous enough for Dunham to truly shine.  He, of course, still did great.  Tim Van Orden, keeper of blueberries and guide to refreshing swimming holes, placed third for CMS.  Two tough guys, Ernie Brake and John Pajer rounded out the top five for the masters.

Matt Russell broke the Maine state record at Mt Washington, taking over 2 minutes off of Rob Pierce’s time from 1995. Matt is one of four CMS members to hold state records (Blake set the NY record in 2005 while still a member of CMS).

2010 US National Champions

The Central Mass Striders are once again the US National Mountain Running Champions.  The Open team consisting of Matt Russell, Pete Maksimow, Jim Johnson, Ben Nephew, and Andy McCarron placed first overall at the 2010 Mount Washington Road Race (results) up in NH over the weekend, giving CMS it's 4th US National Mountain Running title in the last 7 years (only 6 of those years had US Championships).
