CMS Senior Team wins USATF National Masters Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park – Boston, MA

The Central Mass Striders Senior (50+) team took Gold by beating out three other teams while the Masters (40+) team placed 6^th out of 7 teams competing in the 2021 USATF National Masters Cross Country Championships held at Franklin Park – Boston, MA. The late morning 5K race had temperatures in the low 60’s with partly sunny skies drying out idle puddles and mud from the previous night’s rain. Paul Bazanchuk would run 21:51 to place 28^th overall and 8^th within in the 65-69 age group in the 60+ event which was the first cross country event (5K) of the morning. Franklin Park’s 5K course would require three loops and one pass through Bear Cage Hill.

Greg Putnam led CMS with his 2^nd place age group (50-54) in the combined 40 and 50 year old 5K race having 91 competitors. Greg’s time of 17:28 was followed by Tim Van Orden, 17:54, who placed 5^th in the 50-54 age group. The next four CMS runner placings for the team were a crowded affair with Scott Grandfield, Todd Callaghan, Joe Shairs and Steve Brightman crossing the line over the next 23 seconds. The masters team (40+) was led by Scott Leslie who cracked the top 10 with a 9^th place finish and time of 17:05. Erik Johnson, making his CMS debut would follow, passing the finish with a time of 18:11. Dave Dunham and Dan Verrington, being declared down to the 40+ squad to enable a team score, ran 19:25 and 19:49 allowing Jim Pawlicki to close out the scoring minutes later.

2010 US National Champions

The Central Mass Striders are once again the US National Mountain Running Champions.  The Open team consisting of Matt Russell, Pete Maksimow, Jim Johnson, Ben Nephew, and Andy McCarron placed first overall at the 2010 Mount Washington Road Race (results) up in NH over the weekend, giving CMS it's 4th US National Mountain Running title in the last 7 years (only 6 of those years had US Championships).

Bedford Rotary 12 km – 05-22-10 Bedford, NH. $2,400 total prize money. $20 entry fee.
Course record 36:21, Nate Jenkins. New version of the course 37:50 Joseph Koech.

This will be the 8th time that the Grand Prix (1985-2010) has had a 12 km as part of the series. During that time Bedford has been the only 12 km to host the championship. CMS has won the team championship four times, BAA and GBTC have both won once. CMS holds the team record with an impressive 3:08:58 from 2000 for an average of 37:48 (5:04 pace) per scoring team member.

Weekend Results - 03-07-10

A big weekend on the National stage for the CMS men this past Sat/Sun as a hearty bunch of striders made their way out to Syracuse, NY for the 2010 US National Snowshoe Championships and a few others headed down to Caumsett State Park, Lloyd Neck, Long Island, New York for the US National 50k Championships.  CMS came out of the weekend with 3 individual USATF medals and 2 US Championship Team medals.

CMS took another National Team Title in the 50k with Dan Verrington, Ben Nephew, and Jesse Regnier all scoring for CMS and all placeing in the top 10!  Ben Nephew proclaimed after that race that when he grows up, he wants to be as fast as Dan Verrington.  Dan destroyed is old 45-49 50k record with a 3:15 yesterday on Long Island.  He was on pace for a 3:06 past halfway, but everyone seemed to slow over the last few 5k loops. He was 4th overall, and second master.  Ben was 5th in 3:18, and our new man Jesse was also in the top 10 (finishing 8th overall).  Jesse went out with eventual winner Mike Wardian for the first few miles, including a crazy 5:12 4th mile.  This was Jesse's first race longer than 8 miles.

Out in the deep snow of East Syracuse, Kevin Tilton (7th overall in a loaded field) led the CMS men to a strong showing at the 10th US National Snowshoe Championships.  There is no official team scoring, but CMS placed 4 in the top 15 and had two others in the top 35.  On Sunday, the CMS/Dion relay team won the National Snowshoe Relay Championship Gold Medal with a team of Jim Johnson, Matt Russell, Kevin Tilton, and Kelly Mortenson.

CMS runners took five of the top six spots in the USATF NE mountain series which concluded this weekend at Mt Ascutney in Windsor VT. In all runners climbed over 12,000' and descended more than 6,000' while covering more than 38 miles during the six race series. Pictured above is series winner Andy McCarron (CMS).

USATF 10 Mile championship

The 10 mile is less than 3 weeks away. Here is a bit of history.....


DH Jones 10m – 02-22-09 Amherst, MA. $10,850 total prize money. $25 entry fee.
Course record Bob Hodge 48:57. DH Jones was in the GP one other time (1999).

This will be the 16th time that the Grand Prix (1985-2009) has had a 10 mile as part of the series. CMS has won the team championship 11 times; BAA and GBTC have both won twice. CMS also holds eight of the top 10 fastest team times. The team record, held by CMS, is 4:13:21 set in 1992. That is an impressive average of 50:40 for five runners. CMS put six runners in the top 10 that year. Wayne Jacob finished in 10th place in 51:30 and failed to score for the team! The last time CMS took the title was in 1998 (note: The 10 mile was not part of the Grand Prix from 2000-2006). CMS runners have been the individual winner three times. Scott Bagley won in 1988 and 1991 running 49:55 and 49:36. Craig Fram (who ran for CMS for a few years in the mid-90’s) was the New England champion in 1996 running 49:57, he finished third overall but the other runners were not USATF New England athletes. Additionally Dave Dunham (CMS 1992-present) won while representing GLRR in 1991 (49:36). Dave has also won twice at DH Jones when it was not part of the GP (1992 & 2001) running 50:36 and 55:04 respectively.
