Weekend Results - 02/14/10

Holy cow there was some fast performances this weekend.... and none was better than a huge PR by new CMS member Bob Wiles in the 5000 meters at the Valentine Invitational at Boston University (results) on Saturday.  Bob 'punched 15 minutes in the face' in his heat of the 5k on Saturday night down in Boston and ran to the tune of 14:56.  I would call that more of a 'Chuck Norris round house kick' than a punch in the face, but either way you slice it, it's been a huge indoor season for Bob this year so far and big things are to come from this guy on the roads this spring for sure... Also on the track, snowshoer and trail monster Greg Hammett broke the elusive 2 minute barrier for the first time this season (after doubling 800/Mile in just about every meet) in the 800 meters at BU on Saturday with a great last lap kick and Jeff Goupil competed in a strong mile run earlier in the day.  TiVo ran his qualifier on Saturday over in NY at the Camp Saratoga 8k (results) in light snowcover, and placed 4th in a stacked race, to secure his spot on the starting line at the U.S. National Snowshoe Championships in a few weeks.  Double-J 'doubled up' again this weekend and joined some of the usual striders (Dave Quintal, Dan Verrington, Dave Dunham) at the Bradford Valentine 5 Miler (results) in Haverhill, MA on Saturday, and then came back on Sunday for a road version of Frosty's Dash (results) in Atkinson, NH. KG had a battle down in Brockton, MA at the Paddy Kelly 5 Miler (results) and ran a great time, just one second out of 2nd place... Another week down, and still no sign of Kevin Beck's Master's debut anywhere...we'll be keeping our eyes open....

Weekend Results - 01/31/10

There was CMS Men's Open team action this weekend on the track and the snow.  Down in Boston, MA on Saturday, some Striders took part in the BU Terrier Classic at Boston University.  Up in Center Sandwich, NH, CMS was well represented at the USSSA National Snowshoe Qualifier race at Sidehiller.  Kevin Tilton took the overall win in his fourth straight Sidehiller victory.  Dan Verrington continues to sandbag week after week, beating up on people in Tewksbury, MA.

This coming weekend (February 6th) the Northfield Mountain Snowshoe race is happening.  This is a club race put on by Dave Dunham.  This is also part of the WMAC / Dion Snowshoe Series.

At the end of the month, CMS will begin it's title defense in the first USATF-NE Road Racing Grand Prix event for 2010.  DH Jones 10 Miler will be held on Sunday, February 28th in Amherst, MA.  An email has been sent to CMS MORT members to find out who is planning on running the race.  If you have not gotten the email, please let me know (email me at newhampshirejj at gmail dot com).  Photo of Kevin Tilton on his way to a win on Saturday, by Jamie Gemmiti.

Weekend Results - 01/24/10

This weekend saw CMS MORT road, track, and snowshoe action across 3 states this past weekend.  Mike Quintal ran in his first snowshoe race and had a great showing out at Curly's in Pittsfield, MA.  This is not exactly an ideal 'first race' for anyone interested in trying snowshoe for the first time, but Mike didn't mess around and went straight for the tough stuff.  He ran a fantastic race at one of the more challenging snowshoe courses in New England.  CMS was also well represented at both WMAC / Dion and Granite State Snowshoe Series races between 3 states and 3 races.  Justin Fyffe and Andy McCarron continued to kill on the roads, with two very good runs at a very competitive Boston Prep 16 Miler in Derry, NH on Sunday.  Justin and Andy were 2nd and 3rd respectively, at the New England Marathon Championships in Lowell back in October, and continued to show they are two of the top distance runners in the region this weekend, giving Patrick Moulton (BAA) some company up front. CMS MORT Team Manager Al Bernier ran a very speedy 3k at the GBTC Invite at Harvard University and Dan Verrington continued to sandbag at the local 5k in Tewksbury.
