CMS closes out the 2021 USATF New England Cross Country Grand Prix Series

The Central Mass Striders finished up the 2021 USATF New England Cross Country Grand Prix Series at Rachel's Run 5K in Tyngsboro, MA. The masters team (40+) was able to solidify a series 2nd place overall as the team of five competed in the 2 lap course at the Academy of Notre Dame.

CMS Senior Team Wins USATF New England Cross Country Championship - Franklin Park

The Central Mass Striders Seniors (50+) won the New England Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park, three weeks after taking the 5K National Cross Country team title. Gregory Putnam took the 50+ title leading CMS. Tim Van Orden, Steve Brightman, Joe Shairs, Scott Grandfield, Todd Callaghan, Dan Verrington, Jim Pawlicki finished for the team while Scott Leslie (40) placed 7^th overall in the masters race that had 89 competitors, 8 masters teams and 6 senior teams that scored with the minimum 5 runners each. CMS also had two open runners in the 10K with racing team manager, Scott Mindel running 32:57 (19th) and Keith McAteer pacing 33:58 (39th). The CMS Senior team will be competing at Cross Country Nationals in Tallahassee Florida in December.

CMS men race New England Cross Country Championships

CMS open 5^th, masters 3^rd, seniors 1^st at XC Championships, Franklin Park - 

The CMS open team placed 5^th overall at the USATF New England Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park on Sunday. Ten teams from New England competed on mostly dry course. Dan Vassallo led the way and finished 22^nd overall, 32:34. Scott Mindel and Daniel Raboin (PR on the course) followed suit within the next 30 seconds. Jack Delehanty broke 34 minutes to place 44^th while David Brooks and Bryan Trinque brought in all CMS runners in the open race.

The Senior team took first place out of 6 scoring teams bunching in 1-4 runners within 21 seconds. Tim Van Orden (19th), Todd Callaghan (21st), Steve Brightman (22nd), and David Principe (24th) were also the 3^rd, 4^th, 5^th, and 6^th 50+ runners in the race. Dan Verrington would cap the scoring for the seniors. Martin Tighe was the 4^th 60+ year old. David Harper, last here 10 years ago rounded out the CMS runners.

The masters with three 40-49 runners (Patrick Rich, Arthur Besse, Derrick Jones), were led by Patrick Rich who placed 9^th overall and a time of 27:23. Tim, Todd, and Steve would score down from the 50+ age group. Arthur Besse would cap the scoring for the team who finished 3^rd behind BAA and HFC Striders.

CMS 5th at Wayland Cross Country Festival

The Central Mass Strider men’s team traveled to Wayland, MA for the third Grand Prix race in the Cross Country Grand Prix Series. The cross country festival hosted a new course with plenty of challenging terrain in the middle mile of the 5K. Dan Vassallo and Daniel Raboin placed 4^th and 5^th overall finishing 3 seconds apart. 

Tim Van Orden was the 3^rd CMS runner and first Senior (50+) to cross the finish line. Arthur Besse, also logging heavy miles for the Cape Cod Marathon (USATF New England Marathon Championship) was the 4^th CMS runner and 4^th 40+ runner. Jonathan Stiles made his CMS Men’s Racing Team debut, capped the 5^th place to allow the team to score in the USATF event.

The next XC Grand Prix race will be the New England Championships at Franklin Park on November 11.

CMS places 2nd in 1st Cross Country Grand Prix race

The CMS men’s open team placed second overall at the GBTC XC Invite in Carlisle, MA. The open team placed 3 men in the top 11 overall in the first of five Cross Country Grand Prix Races for USATF New England. Scott Mindel, 2^nd overall, was the first CMS runner to cross the line for the 5K distance. DJ Raboin and Jack Delehanty were five seconds apart finishing 9^th and 11th. Dave Brooks just missed breaking 17 flat in 22^nd place. Arthur Besse, doubled up, racing in the open race following his masters race running around 18:05 (official results pending). Bryan Trinque broke six minute mile pace to finish 46^th overall in his first cross country race in many years.  

Tim Van Orden and Arthur Besse placed 3^rd and 4^th in the masters 5K race. Tim had the lead until the last half mile. He would finish just eight seconds behind TJ Unger who took the win. Dan Verrington placed 18^th overall.

The CMS open men placed 10^th, CMS masters and CMS Senior teams both placed 3^rd. under sunny skies but muddy conditions at Franklin Park who hosted the USATF New England Open and Masters Championships. The open team was led by Scott Mindel placing 26^th overall. He was followed by Jack Delehanty who was running his first 10K cross country race, finishing in 54^th place. Scott Leslie was the 3^rd CMS runner finishing 59^th. David Brooks broke 35 minutes and came in as the 4^th CMS open runner in 75^th place. Daniel Raboin would close out the open team scoring.

The masters/senior teams were led by 50 year old Tim Van Orden, 15^th place – 27:38, who also paced both teams to third place finishes. Todd Callaghan was the 2^nd master runner for the CMS masters team. Gregory Hammett and Arthur Besse were right behind Todd with 28:30 and 28:38 respectively. Joe Shairs would score down from the 50+ team to cap the scoring for the masters team with his 28:55. The CMS masters would finish 3^rd , scoring 91 points behind BAA (21) and Dirigo RC (55). The HFC Striders would finish 4^th with 104 pts.

The CMS Senior teams 3^rd runner was David Principe, placing 32^nd. Paul Young would run 33:50 and Steve Laska would wrap up the scoring for the CMS 50+ team who placed 3^rd behind Greater Springfield Harriers (59 points) and Dirigo RC (69 points) who broke the tie with CMS with the 6^th place runners finish.
