CMS 20k history

The 20k distance (12.4 miles) is one of the rarely contested distances in the history of the USATF road running grand prix.  This year will be only the seventh time the distance was included in the 7 race series which has been held since 1985.  In 1985 two 20k’s were run with one designated as the “Men’s masters championship” and the other being the overall championship held in Charlton and Springfield MA respectively.  I could not locate results from 1985.  In 1987 the race was held in Marshfield over a hilly double-loop course.  In 1992 Pittsfield hosted the championships and in 2000, 2002, and 2003 the Bedford Lions (Bedford NH) held the last three 20k’s.  CMS was the team champion in 1992 and 2000.  GLRR won in 1987, WRT in 2003, and BAA in 2002.  CMS had an individual champion in 1992 when Dave Dunham edged BRC’s Ed Sheehan by 9 seconds.  Dunham also won while wearing the green of GLRR in 1987.   CMS holds the team record with a time of 5:29:37 which is an average of 1:05:55 for the five scoring members, or an average of 5:19 per mile.

06/29/03 – Unfortunately for CMS, the Ascutney hill climb was the day before and the Mountain series was the focus for many of the guys who would also normally do the GP.  Verrington beat the Moulton brothers who would just edge him in age if you added them together.

CMS kicks off New England Cross Country Grand Prix

Dan Vassallo finished 5th
Carlisle, MA -
CMS finished 4th overall out of 7 teams at the Thomas Chamberas 6K XC race this morning. This was race number one in the Cross Country Grand Prix. It takes five runners with a USATF membership to score for a team. CMS was fortunate to have five men not only show up at the starting line, but finish the race. Dan Vassallo blazed to a 5th place overall finish with a time of 18:32 over the trails of Great Brook Farm State Park in Carlisle, MA. Michael Quintal finished 15th and James Pawlicki was 29th overall. Master runner Arthur Besse finished 38th and was 4th in the master division. Dan Verrtington was 52nd overall and 2nd in the Senior (50+) age group. The team should be at each of the races that compile the Grand Prix Series. The 2013 XC Grand Prix schedule is below. All CMS members are welcome. You will need a USATF membership to score.

Weekend Results - 03/21/10

The Grand Prix action resumed this past weekend down in New Bedford, MA at the Half Marathon Championships hosted once again by the New Bedford Half Marathon.  The CMS Men's Open and Master's teams were in full swing and had (unofficially) some strong finishes against very tough competition.  The CMS Men's Open team finished 3rd overall, out of 25 scoring teams, only falling to two very strong teams in BAA and adidas New England.  Jim Johnson, Bob Wiles, Jeff Goupil, and Greg Hammett all ran personal best times and the rest of the team really stepped up and competed well in near perfect conditions.  Justin Fyffe and Andy McCarron (typically the top 2 guys for the Striders) had some issues but still toughed it out to the finish.  Justin had been battling a head cold and Andy was dealing with stomach issues during the race and had to make a pit stop.  Teamwork was the word of the day, as there was at one point a pack of 6 CMS runners together for about half the race.  The masters team (pending a correction in the results) was 2nd only to a strong performance by Whirlaway.

As the standings get updated this week, the CMS Men's Open Team should still be in second place overall, behind BAA in the total overall team standings for the 2010 Grand Prix.

CMS Blog Writeups: Jim Johnson - Jim Pawlicki - Jeff Goupil - Kevin Gorman - Dave Quintal - Justin Fyffe - Dave Harper
