CMS Seniors 2nd Team at USATF XC Nationals; Eric Blake 3rd overall

The Central Mass Striders senior team (50+) of Greg Putnam, Joe Shairs, Steve Brightman, Tim Van Orden and Todd Callaghan placed 2nd overall out of 11 teams in the 2021 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships hosted at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, FL on December 11, 2021. Teams arrived to humid and foggy conditions. The fog lifted by the time the masters men’s 10K started at 11AM. 





Greg Putnam would lead the team with a time of 35:56, placing 43rd (3rd 50+) in the masters race comprised of 40 and 50 year old athletes. Joe Shairs placed 93rd (15th 50+) with a time of 37:44 just three seconds ahead of Steve Brightman (37:47, 16th 50+). Tim Van Orden (23rd 50+) and Todd Callaghan (32nd 50+) would run 38:09 and 38:34 to close out the scoring. West Valley Track Club would take the 50+ team win with just 28 points. Garden State Track Club would place 3rd with 95 points.

Meanwhile, Eric Blake would place 3rd overall in the masters race with a time of 33:14, just 2 seconds behind Peter Gilmore of West Valley and 19 seconds behind winner, Jesse Davis from Indiana Elite AC. Eric was in the mix for the lead right up until 6K on the spectator friendly 5 loop 10 course.

CMS Senior Team wins USATF National Masters Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park – Boston, MA

The Central Mass Striders Senior (50+) team took Gold by beating out three other teams while the Masters (40+) team placed 6th out of 7 teams competing in the 2021 USATF National Masters Cross Country Championships held at Franklin Park – Boston, MA. The late morning 5K race had temperatures in the low 60’s with partly sunny skies drying out idle puddles and mud from the previous night’s rain. Paul Bazanchuk would run 21:51 to place 28th overall and 8th within in the 65-69 age group in the 60+ event which was the first cross country event (5K) of the morning. Franklin Park’s 5K course would require three loops and one pass through Bear Cage Hill.

Greg Putnam led CMS with his 2nd place age group (50-54) in the combined 40 and 50 year old 5K race having 91 competitors. Greg’s time of 17:28 was followed by Tim Van Orden, 17:54, who placed 5th in the 50-54 age group. The next four CMS runner placings for the team were a crowded affair with Scott Grandfield, Todd Callaghan, Joe Shairs and Steve Brightman crossing the line over the next 23 seconds. The masters team (40+) was led by Scott Leslie who cracked the top 10 with a 9th place finish and time of 17:05. Erik Johnson, making his CMS debut would follow, passing the finish with a time of 18:11. Dave Dunham and Dan Verrington, being declared down to the 40+ squad to enable a team score, ran 19:25 and 19:49 allowing Jim Pawlicki to close out the scoring minutes later.

CMS takes on US Mountain National Championship


The Seniors carried the torch for the Central Mass Striders at the USATF National Mountain Running Championship at Waterville Valley, NH. Tim Van Orden won his age group and led the team with his 29th place overall finish. Todd Callaghan, Steve Brightman, Jeff Hunt, and Ed Sheldon wrapped up the scoring for which the team placed 2nd in the open, 1st masters, and 1st senior team.

CMS masters place 4th at Cross Country Nationals in Lexington, KY

The Central Mass Striders, CMS, men’s masters team placed 4th overall at the 2017 USATF Club Cross Country Championships at Masterson Station Park in Lexington, KY. The winds picked up during the morning providing a wind chill on top of the sub-freezing temperatures that began the day for the rolling courses set up for all races.

David Principe Sr, Derrick Jones, Joe Shairs, Josh Perks, Dave Dunham, Chris Mahoney
Chris Mahoney (Westford, MA), made his masters debut for CMS with a 16th place overall finish with a time of 33:52. He was followed by Greg Putnam (Stoneham, MA) and Derrick Jones (Henrietta, NY) both breaking 35 minutes. Joshua Perks (Windham, NH) and Joe Shairs (Peabody, MA) followed, separated by 7 seconds, running 35:22 and 35:29 respectively to give CMS a combined 160 points, 10 points ahead of Club Northwest. David Principe (Johnston, RI) and Dave Dunham (Bradford, MA), both Seniors  (50+) running for the masters team would round out the seven CMS finishers with times of 37:13 and 37:34.

CMS masters win National 5K Championships in Syracuse, NY

The Central Mass Striders men’s masters team won the USATF National Masters 5K at the Syracuse Festival of Races. Greg Putnam led the team with a 7th overall masters finish and a time of 16:03. He placed 3rd overall in the 45-49 age group. Derrick Jones made is CMS debut running 16:20 and a 13th place finish. Joshua Perks ran 16:41 for 17th and Joe Shairs ran 16:55 for 23rd overall within the masters category.

USATF 2016 National Club Cross Country Championships Tallahassee, FL

The Central Mass Striders traveled to Tallahassee Florida for the USATF 2016 National Club Cross Country Championships. A rolling course, home to FSU, within Apalachee Regional awaited teams from all over the country. It felt like home for CMS. Several teams from the USATF New England Association were in attendance: Greater Springfield Harriers, Liberty Athletic Club, Greater Lowell Road Runners, Boston Athletic Association, Greater Boston Track Club, HFC Striders, Battle Road Track Club, NE Distance, SISU Project, The Heartbreakers. 

Also from the North came freezing temperatures on the morning of the race. Temperatures warmed up to the 50’s by the late morning. The Central Mass Striders men’s masters team, led by Tim Van Orden, finished 7th out of 16 40+ teams.  Tim ran 34:23. He was followed by Gregory Putnam who paced the course in 34:56. Todd Callaghan ran 35:11. Joe Shairs clocked the course in 35:23 while Arthur Besse capped the scoring with a time of 35:50. James Pawlicki ran 36:28. 

Nate Jenkins ran a solid race, passing runners throughout the five loop course, placing 119th in a field of 307 starting runners in the Men’s Open 10K race. He ran a time of 32:10, 5:11 pace per mile. Nate’s wife, Melissa Donais, ran 24:24 to place 165th out of 188 runners.
