CMS Seniors 2nd Team at USATF XC Nationals; Eric Blake 3rd overall

The Central Mass Striders senior team (50+) of Greg Putnam, Joe Shairs, Steve Brightman, Tim Van Orden and Todd Callaghan placed 2^nd overall out of 11 teams in the 2021 USATF National Club Cross Country Championships hosted at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, FL on December 11, 2021. Teams arrived to humid and foggy conditions. The fog lifted by the time the masters men’s 10K started at 11AM. 

Greg Putnam would lead the team with a time of 35:56, placing 43^rd (3^rd 50+) in the masters race comprised of 40 and 50 year old athletes. Joe Shairs placed 93^rd (15^th 50+) with a time of 37:44 just three seconds ahead of Steve Brightman (37:47, 16^th 50+). Tim Van Orden (23^rd 50+) and Todd Callaghan (32^nd 50+) would run 38:09 and 38:34 to close out the scoring. West Valley Track Club would take the 50+ team win with just 28 points. Garden State Track Club would place 3^rd with 95 points.

Meanwhile, Eric Blake would place 3^rd overall in the masters race with a time of 33:14, just 2 seconds behind Peter Gilmore of West Valley and 19 seconds behind winner, Jesse Davis from Indiana Elite AC. Eric was in the mix for the lead right up until 6K on the spectator friendly 5 loop 10 course.

CMS closes out the 2021 USATF New England Cross Country Grand Prix Series

The Central Mass Striders finished up the 2021 USATF New England Cross Country Grand Prix Series at Rachel's Run 5K in Tyngsboro, MA. The masters team (40+) was able to solidify a series 2nd place overall as the team of five competed in the 2 lap course at the Academy of Notre Dame.

CMS Senior Team Wins USATF New England Cross Country Championship - Franklin Park

The Central Mass Striders Seniors (50+) won the New England Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park, three weeks after taking the 5K National Cross Country team title. Gregory Putnam took the 50+ title leading CMS. Tim Van Orden, Steve Brightman, Joe Shairs, Scott Grandfield, Todd Callaghan, Dan Verrington, Jim Pawlicki finished for the team while Scott Leslie (40) placed 7^th overall in the masters race that had 89 competitors, 8 masters teams and 6 senior teams that scored with the minimum 5 runners each. CMS also had two open runners in the 10K with racing team manager, Scott Mindel running 32:57 (19th) and Keith McAteer pacing 33:58 (39th). The CMS Senior team will be competing at Cross Country Nationals in Tallahassee Florida in December.

CMS Senior Team wins USATF National Masters Cross Country Championships at Franklin Park – Boston, MA

The Central Mass Striders Senior (50+) team took Gold by beating out three other teams while the Masters (40+) team placed 6^th out of 7 teams competing in the 2021 USATF National Masters Cross Country Championships held at Franklin Park – Boston, MA. The late morning 5K race had temperatures in the low 60’s with partly sunny skies drying out idle puddles and mud from the previous night’s rain. Paul Bazanchuk would run 21:51 to place 28^th overall and 8^th within in the 65-69 age group in the 60+ event which was the first cross country event (5K) of the morning. Franklin Park’s 5K course would require three loops and one pass through Bear Cage Hill.

Greg Putnam led CMS with his 2^nd place age group (50-54) in the combined 40 and 50 year old 5K race having 91 competitors. Greg’s time of 17:28 was followed by Tim Van Orden, 17:54, who placed 5^th in the 50-54 age group. The next four CMS runner placings for the team were a crowded affair with Scott Grandfield, Todd Callaghan, Joe Shairs and Steve Brightman crossing the line over the next 23 seconds. The masters team (40+) was led by Scott Leslie who cracked the top 10 with a 9^th place finish and time of 17:05. Erik Johnson, making his CMS debut would follow, passing the finish with a time of 18:11. Dave Dunham and Dan Verrington, being declared down to the 40+ squad to enable a team score, ran 19:25 and 19:49 allowing Jim Pawlicki to close out the scoring minutes later.

Vassallo runs 2:24:59 at Olympic Trials Marathon

Dan Vassallo placed 100^th out of 175 men on Saturday at the US Olympic Team Trials Marathon in Atlanta, GA. The hilly course, starting and finishing in Centennial Olympic Park featured the three challenging 8 mile loops followed by a closing 2.2 mile loop to the finish line.

CMS competes at the Super Sunday 5 Mile Championships

Colin Carroll would lead all CMS finishers by placing 62^nd overall with a time of 26:17 at the Super Sunday 5 mile in Cambridge, MA – USATF New England 5 Mile Road Race Championship. In all CMS had 17 men race in the flat and fast 5 mile course. The men’s open racing team would place 9^th out of 17 teams. Arthur Besse would  pace the men’s masters team to a 2^nd place team finish out of 12 masters teams with a 26:49 clocking. Arthur would place 4^th in the 40-49 age group. Greg Putnam would lead the Senior team to a 1^st place finish, outpacing 11 other teams, with a time of 27:28 and 2^nd in the 50-59 age group. Finally, Paul Bazanchuk would run 34:58 to pace the Veterans team to a 4^th place team finish out of 9 teams. This New England Championship race had the largest amount of USATF competitors with about 675 members competing.

The Central Mass Striders had 15 men compete at the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships, hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, under soggy and muddy conditions.

Dan Vassallo paced the CMS Men’s Open team to a 45^th place finish out of 76 teams. Dan placed 170^th with a time of 33:51. Scott Mindel followed seconds later. Jack Delehanty picked off several runners in the last 2K to break 35 minutes. David Brooks running his first team National Championship finished under 36 minutes. Daniel (DJ) Raboin and Bryan Trinque both ran in the low 37’s on what was the muddiest course of the day having already seen 3 races.

The CMS men’s masters team combined forces of both masters and seniors. Patrick Rich led the way helping the team place 6^th out of 32 masters teams. He placed 38^th overall with his 35:40 clocking. Kevin Hankens would run 36:10, placing 62^nd. Six places later, Steve Brightman came in at 36:25. Tim Van Orden dealt with a hard charging Arhur Besse down the final straight with both getting the same chip time of 37:03. Todd Callaghan would finish three seconds behind them. David Principe and Ben Nephew would cap it off for the masters team who placed 9thon this course in 2014. Martin Tighe would place 28^th with a time of 32:02 in the 60+ 8K race which kicked off all races for the day.
