Weekend Results

The Central Mass Striders Men's teams raced their way into medal positions in the open, masters, and senior categories. The open team finished 2nd to Team Colorado and ahead of Whirlaway. Jim Johnson led the way for CMS. He was followed by Kevin Tilton, Ross Krause, Todd Callaghan (1st 40-44), and Francis Burdett (2nd 45-49). Todd also led the masters to a team win over Team Gloucester and Gate City Striders. The CMS senior team was led by Ernie Brake who finished 2nd overall in the 50-54 age category.

CMS invade Ribfest 5 miler

The Central Mass Striders men’s racing teams competed in the USATF New England 5 mile road race championship under breezy and sunny conditions in Merrimack, NH. The masters team took the win, led by Greg Putnam who was the 3^rd overall master. He was followed by Joe Shairs, Dan Verrington, Dave Dunham, and Jason Porter.

The men’s open racing team placed 4^th overall, led by Nate Jenkins who finished 3^rd overall. He was followed by Patrick Rich, Scott Leslie, Morgan Kennedy, and Greg Putnam scored down as the 5^th runner. Colby Chrusciel, Matthew Veiga, Arthur Besse, and Morgan Kennedy ran personal best times for a certified 5 mile road race.

The Senior team also placed 4^th overall. They were led by Dan Verrington whose 28:29 placed him as the 2^nd 50+ runner in the category. Dave Dunham was the 3^rd overall 50+ runner. Martin Tighe, David Lapierre, and CMS team President  - Stephen Laska scored out for the Seniors.

Weekend Results

Dan Vassallo in the CMS white & blue 5th from the curb at the 10,000m

Dan Vassallo placed second overall in the 10,000m on Saturday night and set a personal best, 30:16, in the process. He was the first USATF New England club runner so he is the New England Champion. The race was run with several NCAA runners seeking to meet their qualifying standards. Sam Wood took the win in Bedford NH in the 5K. Jason Porter was the 2nd master. Nate Jenkins ran 14:55 for the win in Newburyport at Trav's Trail Run. Greg Putnam was the top master runner. James Pawlicki and Derek Dorval placed in respective age groups.

CMS 3rd at US National Masters 10K road championships

The Central Mass Striders masters team placed 3^rd overall at the USATF National 10K road race championship in Dedham, MA. CMS won the race last year. BAA and Atlanta Track Club were first and second. One second decided the team placing. Greg Putnam, 7^th overall & 5^th in his age group, ran 33:04. Todd Callaghan, running his first road race for CMS placed 12^th overall (7^th age group) with a time of 34:15. Jason Porter finished behind Todd with a 34:37. He was 8^th in his age group. Dan Verrington (3^rd in his age group of 50-54) and Dave Dunham (7^th in the 50-54) ran 35:54 and 36:29 respectively. CMS finishers in blue.

CMS men compete at An Ras Mor 5K

CMS rolled into Cambridge to run the 3rd race of the USATF New England Road Race Grand Prix Series for 2014. The rain let up but temperatures barely broke 40 degrees. The open team was led by Nate Jenkins. Rumor had it that he had to run in his warm up gear as his racing gear was locked in a car. Undeterred, Nate ran 15:17 which was 7th overall. Morgan Kennedy ran a personal best as he and Scott Leslie both finished under sixteen minutes. Greg Putnam was the top CMS master runner and scored down into the open team as the 5th scoring member with a time of 16:11. Colby Chrusciel ran his 2nd CMS team race by running another personal best with a time of 16:21. Alan Bernier who will be turning 40 in August reminded the competition that he is ready to throw down and ran 16:25. The CMS men's open team placed 5th out of 13 New England teams.

Jason Porter and Joe Shairs were the 2nd and 3rd masters for CMS. Arthur Besse ran 17:15 and Dave Dunham scored down into the CMS masters team despite turning 50 years old yesterday. Derek Dorval, Tim Van Orden, Martin Tighe, Aaron Baldwin (first CMS team race) and Dan Verrington easily broke 18 minutes. The CMS masters team placed 1st out of 10 scoring teams.

As we await the official results, below is a rough sample from ChronoTrackLive. As we await team results, it would appear that the Central Mass Striders have scored the first Senior (50 plus) team in a while. Get used to seeing Dave Dunahm, Martin Tighe, Dan Verrington, David Lapierre, CMS President Stephen Laska, and Frank Ruggierio. The CMS Senior team placed 5th out of six teams.

CMS teams take on New Bedford

The Central Mass Striders open team placed 5^th overall as a team at the New Bedford Half Marathon. New Bedford hosted the New England Championship several years in a row. The team was led by Dan Vassallo who placed 3^rd with a time of 1:07:08. The masters team placed 3^rd overall and was led by Jason Porter.  Jason was the 8^th master to cross the finish line. The next Central Mass Strider team race will be the An Ras Mor 5K at the end of March.

Jim Johnson won the Granite State Snowshoe Championship in Allenstown, NH. In the process, he also won the 2014 Granite State Snowshoe Series. Dave Dunham also won his age division for the series. CMS takes gold and silver at US Snowshoe Championships

The Central Mass Striders (CMS) Dion open and masters teams ventured to the United States Snowshoe National Championship in Woodford, VT. The open team was led by Kevin Tilton (12th overall) placed 2^nd overall, a mere 24 seconds behind first place Dion/South Hill Distance Project.  The Central Mass Striders (CMS) Dion masters team placed first in the master team category and was led by James Pawlicki (20th overall). CMS finishers and team summaries are listed below.  Several CMS athletes found the podium by placing in the top three of their age category. Kevin Tilton, Dave Dunham, Todd Callaghan, Paul Bazanchuk found gold medals while Jim Johnson and James Pawlicki reached medals as well.

CMS 1st and 4th at Jones Group 10 mile

The CMS men’s masters team won the USATF 10 mile championships, Jones Group 10 mile in Amherst, MA on Sunday. They were led by Greg Putnam who was the third master (40+) overall. Dan Vassallo was also third overall, as an open runner, to help the men’s open team to a fourth place team finish. Martin Tighe was the 4^th 50+ in the race. The 10 mile race featured a different start and finish from prior years but all the hills remained. The next race in the USATF Road Race Grand Prix will be the New Bedford Half Marathon in March.
