Weekend Results - 01/31/10

There was CMS Men's Open team action this weekend on the track and the snow.  Down in Boston, MA on Saturday, some Striders took part in the BU Terrier Classic at Boston University.  Up in Center Sandwich, NH, CMS was well represented at the USSSA National Snowshoe Qualifier race at Sidehiller.  Kevin Tilton took the overall win in his fourth straight Sidehiller victory.  Dan Verrington continues to sandbag week after week, beating up on people in Tewksbury, MA.

This coming weekend (February 6th) the Northfield Mountain Snowshoe race is happening.  This is a club race put on by Dave Dunham.  This is also part of the WMAC / Dion Snowshoe Series.

At the end of the month, CMS will begin it's title defense in the first USATF-NE Road Racing Grand Prix event for 2010.  DH Jones 10 Miler will be held on Sunday, February 28th in Amherst, MA.  An email has been sent to CMS MORT members to find out who is planning on running the race.  If you have not gotten the email, please let me know (email me at newhampshirejj at gmail dot com).  Photo of Kevin Tilton on his way to a win on Saturday, by Jamie Gemmiti.

Weekend Results - 01/24/10

This weekend saw CMS MORT road, track, and snowshoe action across 3 states this past weekend.  Mike Quintal ran in his first snowshoe race and had a great showing out at Curly's in Pittsfield, MA.  This is not exactly an ideal 'first race' for anyone interested in trying snowshoe for the first time, but Mike didn't mess around and went straight for the tough stuff.  He ran a fantastic race at one of the more challenging snowshoe courses in New England.  CMS was also well represented at both WMAC / Dion and Granite State Snowshoe Series races between 3 states and 3 races.  Justin Fyffe and Andy McCarron continued to kill on the roads, with two very good runs at a very competitive Boston Prep 16 Miler in Derry, NH on Sunday.  Justin and Andy were 2nd and 3rd respectively, at the New England Marathon Championships in Lowell back in October, and continued to show they are two of the top distance runners in the region this weekend, giving Patrick Moulton (BAA) some company up front. CMS MORT Team Manager Al Bernier ran a very speedy 3k at the GBTC Invite at Harvard University and Dan Verrington continued to sandbag at the local 5k in Tewksbury.

Weekend Results - 01/17/10

It was a snowshoe weekend for the CMS Polar Bears, as members of the CMS Men's Open and Masters teams battled some of the best snowshoe competition anywhere.  There were 6 races this weekend on the New England/NY Snowshoe circuit (NY x 3, NH x 1, MA x 1, CT x 1), and CMS was out in full force between the 3 races in NH, MA, and NY.  

Kevin Tilton, Ben Nephew, Jim Pawlicki, and Christian Muentener all represented at the 2nd Granite State Snowshoe Series race up in Lyndeborough, NH.  Kevin took the 'W' up there and Jim's lovely and talented girlfriend Krissy K took some great photos that can be seen here.   Scott Mason also took some photos that are up on his Smugmug page.

Jim Johnson, Dave Dunham, Tim VanOrden, Greg Hammett, and Tim Mahoney all headed out west to Adams, MA for the WMAC race up at Greylock Glen.  Brad Herder took some photos that should be up soon on Berkshire Sports.  Johnson, Dunham, and VanOrden then stayed out west and ran in Guilderland, NY on Sunday in another WMAC series race in which the snow was scarce and the times were FAST.  Photos and video should be available at the ARE's site soon.

Lastly, longtime CMS sandbagger Dan Verrington ran a long '5k' over in Tewksbury, MA in the weekly Fudgcicle Series.

I told Dave yesterday that I'd be racing for the master's team in 2010. After years of competitive dormancy, I now have an excuse to try to make something of myself. I'm one of these types who pretty much quit after 35 because I realized I was never going to run as fast as I had just a couple years earlier, plus I had some bumps in the road along the way. But I know it's not about that. I miss the pre- and post-race banter, the ribbing, the road trips, and the general bullshit.

I've been with the club for over a dozen years now and realize I can count most of my best friends among its members, even if I've been reclusive and not apt to meet with people unless firebombed out of my chair. I also look forward to meeting some of the newer and younger guys on the MORT. Here's hoping 2010 is what I have been scheming for it to be, for all of you as well as for me personally.

Am I allowed to write love letters like this here? I better be, I'm old and grizzled now.
