CMS closes out the USATF New England Grand Prix at the Lone Gull 10K

The Central Mass Striders traveled to Gloucester, MA for the USATF New England 10K Championships. This was the last in the seven race Grand Prix series which has historically finished each year with a marathon (Ocean State, Cape Cod, Bay State, or Manchester City) since 1997. The Vermont City Marathon, held in May, is rumored to be bidding for the 2016 Grand Prix. It was 72 degrees, cloudy, with a 11mph wind coming from the west, northwest at the start. The head wind greeted the athletes exiting Eastern Point and over the last 1.5 miles.

The CMS open team was led by Dan Vassallo (31:18) placing 6th overall. Scott Leslie, winner of the 2015 All Terrain Series, placed 10th overall with a time of 32:15. The next three scoring members for the open team dropped down from the masters scoring to help the open team place 4th overall. Gregory Putnam was the 2nd master overall with a time of 33:54. Joe Shairs, Tim Van Orden, Arthur Besse, and James Pawlicki capped off the scoring for the masters team who placed 2nd to the BAA.

The CMS Seniors team placed 2nd overall to Whirlaway. Dan Verrington led the way for the Seniors and was the 7th Senior overall. Dave Dunham, Martin Tighe, John Gillis, and John Griego finished up the top five scoring for the Senior team.

USATF NE 10k history

The 10km distance has been contested in all of the Grand Prix series (1985-2014). This will be the fourth time Lone Gull (Gloucester, MA) has hosted the championship. Nashua (NH) and Winthrop hosted the championship five times with no other site hosting more than three times. CMS has won the team championship sixteen times including an impressive 12 times in a row from 1989-2000.  CMS last two wins were 2011 and 2013 (after a long drought). The BAA has the next most wins with three.  Whirlaway and Reebok Boston each have two victories. Nike Boston holds the team record with an impressive 2:28:03 from 1988. CMS best team time was 2:29:04 in 1989 for an average of

CMS 20k history

The 20k distance (12.4 miles) is one of the rarely contested distances in the history of the USATF road running grand prix.  This year will be only the seventh time the distance was included in the 7 race series which has been held since 1985.  In 1985 two 20k’s were run with one designated as the “Men’s masters championship” and the other being the overall championship held in Charlton and Springfield MA respectively.  I could not locate results from 1985.  In 1987 the race was held in Marshfield over a hilly double-loop course.  In 1992 Pittsfield hosted the championships and in 2000, 2002, and 2003 the Bedford Lions (Bedford NH) held the last three 20k’s.  CMS was the team champion in 1992 and 2000.  GLRR won in 1987, WRT in 2003, and BAA in 2002.  CMS had an individual champion in 1992 when Dave Dunham edged BRC’s Ed Sheehan by 9 seconds.  Dunham also won while wearing the green of GLRR in 1987.   CMS holds the team record with a time of 5:29:37 which is an average of 1:05:55 for the five scoring members, or an average of 5:19 per mile.

06/29/03 – Unfortunately for CMS, the Ascutney hill climb was the day before and the Mountain series was the focus for many of the guys who would also normally do the GP.  Verrington beat the Moulton brothers who would just edge him in age if you added them together.
