CMS teams win gold at Mount Washington

The Central Mass Striders teams ran away with three 1st place team finishes at the Mount Washington Road Race. CMS had 6 finishers in the top 30 and 8 finishers in the top 49 places. Scott Mindel, making his Mount Washington Road Race debut, was the top CMS finisher for the team taking 8th place overall with a time of 1:10:22. All CMS men below.

CMS at Mount Washington and Ribfest 5 mile

The Central Mass Striders men’s racing team had a solid weekend competing in two races in the Granite State: Mount Washington Road Race (June 16) and Ribfest 5 mile (June 17) – USATF New England Road Race Championship. Seniors Dave Dunham, Erik Vandendries, and David Lapierre ran both races while having an impact in the team scoring.

A clear day at the Mount Washington Summit (6,288 ft) awaited runners for the 7.6 mile trek up the auto road from Pinkham Notch. With 14 men racing, CMS won the men’s open, masters, and senior team competition. The CMS Veterans team finished 7^th. 11 out of the 14 men placed in the top within their respective age group.

Patrick Rich led the CMS open team with a 9^th place overall finish with a time of 1:12:29. Dave Dunham and Todd Callaghan would finish five seconds apart, placing 11^th and 12 respectively. Erik Vandendries ran his 3^rd fastest time on the mountain with an 18^th place finish. Matthew Veiga would round out the open team scoring, placing 30^th overall.  Patrick and Todd would win their age groups outright.

Francis Burdett would score down for the masters team as the 5^th runner for CMS. The masters team was within 22 seconds of the open CMS team. The Senior team had David Lapierre and Ed Sheldon scoring as the 4^th and 5^th runners for the team. Stephen Reed, John Martin, and Walter Kuklinkski would combine to pace the Veterans team to 7^th place.  CMS men highlighted below.

Sunday had CMS competing in the Ribfest 5 mile in Merrimack, New Hampshire. 21 men represented. The men’s open team placed 3^rd overall behind the scoring team of Scott Mindel (7^th overall), Scott Leslie (12^th overall), Pat Fullerton (15^th), Gregory Putnam (2^nd 40-49), and Alan Bernier (6^th 40-49).

The men’s masters team placed first. Behind Greg and Alan were Arthur Besse (28:13) who ran his Personal Best for 5 miles, Joe Shairs (5^th 50-59) running his first Grand Prix as a Senior, and Joshua Perks who rounded out the top five for the masters team who outpaced HFC by 63 seconds.

The CMS Senior team placed 1^st edging the Greater Springfield Harriers by over 90 seconds. Joe Shairs paced the Seniors with his Grand Prix debut in the new age group. David Principe finished right behind Joe. The next three Seniors, fresh of the Mount Washington Road Race the day before: Dave Dunham, Erik Vandendries, and David Lapierre capped the top five. CMS men sweep team categories at Mount Washington

Quick re-cap of CMS at Mt Washington

The men swept the team categories taking first in the open, masters, and seniors.  The senior team lowered their course record (from 2015) by 4 minutes.  The masters team time was the sixth fastest ever run, trailing only five times CMS has run.

Individually Jim Johnson captured the Crossan Cup as the top NH finisher.  Matt Veiga was tops in the 25-29 age group.  Todd Callaghan topped the 45-49 age group.  Erik Vandendries took 2^nd place in the 50-54 age group as CMS runners took 7 of the top ten spots in that category.  Veiga, Callaghan, and Vandendries set PR’s as did Eric Narcisi.

CMS has 21 guys entered in the race this weekend with over 250 collective finishes.  Colin Carroll is the only CMS runner who hasn’t raced up Mt Washington before.  He should do fine having run a 1:10 & 2:33 half and full marathon respectively earlier this year.

 

Since 1992 the Open Team has won 20 times, most recently in 2013.  Last year the club placed 2^nd to Team Colorado.  The scoring members of the open team are backed and should be better this year with Jim Johnson, Mike Quintal, Eric Narcisi, and Colin Carroll likely to bump some of the 2015 scorers.

 

The master’s squad holds the 40+ record of 5:53:06 (2009) and hold 8 of the top 10 team times.  Last year’s team beat Team Gloucester by nearly 1 hour.  All scoring members are back!  Todd Callaghan placed 2^nd in the 45-49 last year and looks to move up this year.  He finished 6 minutes ahead of the next person in his age group and the winner (Simon Gutierrez) has now entered the 50-54 age group.

 

The senior team set the 50+ record last year running 6:17:33.  All of the scoring members are back and we’ve added Jeff Hunt who would have scored for the team last year (he was at the time a member of GCS).  The 2015 team beat Team Gloucester by 63 minutes.  Current CMS seniors took the top 6 spots in the 50-54 last year.
