All ages for CMS at XC Grand Prix race number two

The CMS men’s racing team had a diverse age group on the starting line, an open runner (-40) in Tim Mahoney, new CMS master (40+) Ethan Nedeau, and senior (50+) Dan Verrington.  They ran through the 8K cross country course in Westfield with authority. The team did not factor into the scoring as five are needed to finish. The team will hope to change that for the next USATF New England XC Grand Prix event in Wayland, MA on October 13.

CMS kicks off New England Cross Country Grand Prix

CMS finished 4th overall out of 7 teams at the Thomas Chamberas 6K XC race this morning. This was race number one in the Cross Country Grand Prix. It takes five runners with a USATF membership to score for a team. CMS was fortunate to have five men not only show up at the starting line, but finish the race. Dan Vassallo blazed to a 5th place overall finish with a time of 18:32 over the trails of Great Brook Farm State Park in Carlisle, MA. Michael Quintal finished 15th and James Pawlicki was 29th overall. Master runner Arthur Besse finished 38th and was 4th in the master division. Dan Verrtington was 52nd overall and 2nd in the Senior (50+) age group. The team should be at each of the races that compile the Grand Prix Series. The 2013 XC Grand Prix schedule is below. All CMS members are welcome. You will need a USATF membership to score.

CMS runs for the Cranberries in Carver

The CMS men’s open team finished 6^th out of 18 teams at the USATF New England 5 mile road race championship in Carver, MA. The 35^th annual Carver Cranberry Road Race has played host to the championships over the last three years. The team was led by Dan Vassallo who finished 11^th overall with a time of 25:21. Scott Leslie ran 25:36 to set a 5 mile personal record which placed him 17^th overall. Patrick Rich, still recovering from Cranmore Mountain, placed 25^th with a time of 26:15. Greg Putnam, a master, scored down as the 4^th CMS finisher to run 27:02 and Kevin Gorman closed out the scoring for CMS with a 27:34 clocking. Adam Malek and Jim Pawlicki both finished under 28 minutes.

The masters team finished 4^th out of 13 teams and was led by Greg Putnam who finished as the 3^rd overall master in the race. Jason Porter was the next master to follow with a time of 28:03. Joe Shairs was twenty seconds behind Jason with a time of 28:23. Arthur Besse was just nine seconds off his best time for 5 miles as he finished with a 28:55. Dave Dunham, also recovering from the Cranmore Mountain race last weekend, closed out the scoring for the masters team with a 30:41. Martin Tighe (50+) and CMS club president, Stephen Laska (50+), ran well for the team.

CMS men strike gold and silver at USA Mountain Running Championships

Every second counts. This was evident over the weekend where the CMS Men’s Open team lost to the Gate City Striders by three seconds in North Conway, NH. Sunday hosted the USA Mountain Running Championships at Cranmore Mountain. Three laps were contested which started and finished at the top. While five men score for the open, three do so for the masters. This allowed the CMS masters team to trade places and take the gold in that category. The masters team was led by Dave Dunham who trekked the course in 1:06:21. He was the second master in the race and 25^th overall. Tim Van Orden (36^th overall) and Paul Bazanchuk (62^nd overall) rounded out the scoring for CMS which outpaced Gate City by almost four minutes for the gold in the masters team score.

The open team was led by Patrick Rich who had a time of 1:02:58. He was 15^th overall and 12th American. Dave, Tim, and Paul scored down into the open. David Lapierre, also a master, rounded out the scoring for the open team.

CMS teams will be traveling to Carver, MA to compete in the USATF New England 5 mile road race championships this Saturday. 

CMS wins Mount Washington Road Race

The Central Mass Striders took on the Mount Washington Road Race and took wins in the men’s open and masters team results. Patrick Rich led the open team just two days after running 14:57 at the Hollis Fast 5K with a Mount Washington best of 1:07:41 which was good for 11^th overall.  Kevin Tilton followed with a 1:08:52 in 14^th place. Masters Dave Dunham and Francis Burdett scored down into the open while Ross Krause closed out the scoring for the open team. Andy McCarron and Tim Mahoney had strong runs. Following Dave and Francis for the masters team was Scott Clark, Ernest Brake (50+), and John Pajer (50+). Steve Peterson and Paul Bazanchuk had strong efforts for the masters team.

The Central Mass Striders open and masters teams finished 3^rd overall in their respective team competition at the USATF New England 5K Road Race Championship in Hollis New Hampshire last Thursday. The point to point, downhill course drops 224 feet from start to finish resulting in some pretty fast times for everyone. The open team was led by Dan Vassallo with a 14:39. Finishing close behind was Scott Leslie, Chris Mahoney, Patrick Rich, and master Greg Putnam. Greg led the masters team (15:22) and was followed by Dave Dunham, Jason Porter, Arthur Besse, and Martin Tighe. The team will be looking forward to the next Grand Prix Race in Carver, MA on July 27.

CMS Masters Team wins 10K National Championship

The Central Mass Striders masters team won the USATF National Road Race 10K Championship in Dedham, MA. The James Joyce Ramble hosted the event which allowed the masters only race to start three minutes ahead of the open race. CMS placed their top three scorers in the top fifteen overall who averaged 34:34 compared to BAA (34:54) and Whirlaway (35:43).
